OCTOBER 2011 FORUMS
Look for forums on good government led by members of the Minnesota chapters of the American Civil Liberties Union and Common Cause this month, a legislative recap by Terri Bonoff, a discussion with candidate for the U.S. House, Brian Barnes, and a conversation with Mayor Tim Willson and City Council member Dan Ryan on plans for the new Shingle Creek Crossing that will replace Brookdale.
The biggest driver of economic development for several decades will be the transition of our source of energy from fossil fuels to the power of the wind and sun. How will Minnesota fare in this transition? Who will benefit? At our Minnesota's Energy Future Part I in September, the speakers told us of Minnesota's abundant clean energy resources and of the necessity for communities to organize if they want the benefits to go to the people of Minnesota rather than to multi-national corporations. People said our first forum was terrific and that they came away understanding how clean energy can work for Minnesota. Don't miss the first part! Bill Sorem recorded it for you on tape. Click on the link in the article at the end of this page. You won't want to miss Part II with three prominent clean energy leaders. Join us at the Bloomington Civic Center November 1 at 7 p.m.

SOUTHDALE/EDINBOROUGH DEMOCRATS

Southdale Library, 7001 York Avenue S, Edina
Carolyn Jackson - Lobbying Coordinator with the American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota
The ACLU-MN represents and defends the United States and Minnesota constitutions, focusing on the Bill of Rights.
Ms. Jackson, an Edina resident, was a retired lawyer and stay-at-home mom when she joined the ACLU of Minnesota as a volunteer in 2002. Seeing the impact of discrimination against Muslims and suppression of dissent in the wake of 9/11 prompted her to join the ACLU’s “Safe and Free” work. To quote Benjamin Franklin, “Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.” Her job at ACLU since 2008 has been to represent the Bill of Rights at the Capitol, promoting legislation to expand rights and opposing legislation that limits or violates rights. Much of her work in 2011 focused on fighting the effort to limit voting rights known as Voter ID.
Ms. Jackson will touch on several items of current interest including Voter ID and the Marriage Amendment and will be answering questions from the audience.

Keeping Energy Dollars in Minnesota
From the Minnesota's Energy Future Forum sponsored by Think Again MN
and the Bloomington Progressives Issues Forum on September 27
It was an exciting evening at the Bloomington Civic Center as Lynn Hinkle and John Farrell gave us a glimpse into the energy and economic future that could be ours given Minnesota's amazing abundance of renewable energy. Then long term energy justice activist George Crocker brought us down to earth by telling us this potential would be ours only if we become energy literate and work for it through community organizing. If you were not able to join us at the forum, be sure to watch the forum online at the UpTake?. Thank you to Uptake reporter Bill Sorem for making the recording. The first speaker started out positioned in front of the podium away from the microphone, but was soon directed to speak into the microphone so please stay tuned a few moments.
Many people who attended said they learned a great deal more about how renewable energy works and about the jobs and economic benefits it could bring to Minnesota than they have learned at any other forum. Find out how Minnesota's transition to clean energy can be an enormous jobs engine and can bring the $20 billion our state spends annually on fossil fuels and much more Home to communities throughout our state in the coming decades. "We're talking about accomplishing something truly remarkable." stated John Farrell.

Moderator - John Doll, Former MN Senator
and Vice Chair, Senate Energy Committee
Lynn Hinkle - Policy Development Director
, Minnesota Solar Industries Association
The Green-Blue? Alliance: Solar Energy and Labor Issues in Relation to Clean Energy Development
"Renewable energy is an enormous jobs engine for our state." Hear about the public policies that can create those jobs.
John Farrell - Director,
Energy Self Reliant States and Communities Program, Institute for Local Self Reliance
How Distributed Wind Development Can Grow Jobs and Contribute to Economic Development in Minnesota
"Minnesota has a tremendous potential for getting electricity from renewable resources, but an even larger potential in terms of what the economic opportunity could be."
George Crocker - Executive Director, North American Water Office
The Importance of Community Organizing for Developing Distributed Renewable Energy
"Until enough people figure out how to actively pursue their interest, their community's interest, in securiing the benefits that John and Lynn talked about . . . the power of organized capital will prevail. Organized people can beat organized capital every time that the people are organized. The problem is that they're not."
