Look for forums on good government led by members of the Minnesota chapters of the American Civil Liberties Union and Common Cause this month, a legislative recap by Terri Bonoff, a discussion with candidate for the U.S. House, Brian Barnes, and a conversation with Mayor Tim Willson and City Council member Dan Ryan on plans for the new Shingle Creek Crossing that will replace Brookdale.
The biggest driver of economic development for several decades will be the transition of our source of energy from fossil fuels to the power of the wind and sun. How will Minnesota fare in this transition? Who will benefit? At our Minnesota's Energy Future Part I in September, the speakers told us of Minnesota's abundant clean energy resources and of the necessity for communities to organize if they want the benefits to go to the people of Minnesota rather than to multi-national corporations. People said our first forum was terrific and that they came away understanding how clean energy can work for Minnesota. Don't miss the first part! Bill Sorem recorded it for you on tape. Brian Barnes manages global marketing and sales for the marine division of a Fortune 200 company and is an 11-year veteran of the U. S. Naval Reserve. He served as a substitute teacher between shipping assignments.
He has held Democratic leadership roles on district and state committees. Most recently Barnes served as associate chair in Senate District 44 before he and his wife relocated to Edina.

Join us for a thought-provoking evening with noted educator Dr. Stephen Schroeder-Davis?, who has made hundreds of presentations on topics such as ant-intellectualism, academic excellence, and giftedness. His presentation and discussion will examine the implications of and potential remedies for the following:American Idol and Survivor occupy the top 11 spots from the last decade’s television viewing. The lone news show in the top 125 (60 minutes) does not appear until # 116.

Carolyn Jackson - Lobbying Coordinator with the American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota
The ACLU-MN represents and defends the United States and Minnesota constitutions, focusing on the Bill of Rights.
Ms. Jackson, an Edina resident, was a retired lawyer and stay-at-home mom when she joined the ACLU of Minnesota as a volunteer in 2002. Seeing the impact of discrimination against Muslims and suppression of dissent in the wake of 9/11 prompted her to join the ACLU’s “Safe and Free” work. To quote Benjamin Franklin, “Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.” Her job at ACLU since 2008 has been to represent the Bill of Rights at the Capitol, promoting legislation to expand rights and opposing legislation that limits or violates rights. Much of her work in 2011 focused on fighting the effort to limit voting rights known as Voter ID.
Ms. Jackson will touch on several items of current interest including Voter ID and the Marriage Amendment and will be answering questions from the audience.
