Wiki-Wiki:

Wiki-Wiki!

We did not get to wikis in the workshop but the page you are reading is a wiki page. The concept of Wiki is the key to understanding how the web is changing from a reference model, where webmasters post information on-line to a workspace where users create content through a simple text editor and collaborate to create, organize and link information. The webspace you create may serve your immediate needs, say a team organized around a fundraiser, or may be serve a long term reference or training need.

The how-to is simple: Once you enter Edit Mode (click the paper and pencil icon above), making a new page is as simple as putting double parentheses around a set of words. I've done this for some practice pages below.

Click save to exit edit mode. The question mark you see at the end of your new page names means the page is ready to be edited for the first time. Once you click the question mark you'll be taken to your new page where you can write anything you like -including more wiki links to more pages! You may notice that editing mode gives you editing icons just like Word for changing fonts and colors, making links to outside pages, bullet points and more. Feel free to practice in the Sandbox. Add a link to make a new page and experiment. You won't hurt anything and you can always delete the links to any page.

Now consider this: You do not own the pages you create -any registered user can edit the pages you've created and they can make new links to pages they create. This is really what a wiki is -a way for many people to work collaboratively on a publishing project. (That said, we can set up secure pages where only those with permission can edit. We can also hide pages from anonymopus users or even regsitered users by "group".) By the way Wiki-Wiki? means "quickly" in Hawaiian!
